California Statewide Oil & Gas Regulations
In response to a letter from oil industry lobbyists, environmental organizations including the Sierra Club sent this letter to CalGEM as a follow up with a more detailed examination against the fossil fuel industry’s proposed regulatory rollbacks. April 27, 2020
Sierra Club California and dozens of allies sent this letter to Governor Newsom to urge his administration to do everything possible to protect public health and safety during this crisis, and to reject the efforts by the oil industry to exploit this emergency as an excuse to roll back regulatory oversight. A coalition of environmental organizations including the Sierra Club submitted this letter to California Natural Resources Agency, California Department of Conservation, and California Geologic Energy Management Division about the urgent need to resist rollbacks and move forward with oil and gas health and safety regulations. California (CalGEM) Public Health Rule & AB345
Sierra Club and our allies submitted this letter in support of VISION’s comments calling for 2500-ft setbacks on December 10, 2020
Sierra Club supports AB345, a bill that calls for consideration of a 2500-ft setback in the CalGEM Public Health Rule process. We sent this letter in with our allies on May 29, 2020.
CalGEM is developing a public health and safety rule around oil and gas wells. As part of their pre-rulemaking phase, Sierra Club submitted this letter as our scoping comments on May 15, 2020. Our allies at VISION submitted this letter on June 10, 2020 making the case for 2500-ft setbacks. Health experts submitted this letter on April 20, 2020.
California Statewide Oil Well Clean Up
Sierra Club and the Center for Biological Diversity submitted this letter to Gov Newsom on the day that one of the oil giants filed for bankruptcy, to call on the administration to hold the oil industry accountable for paying to clean-up their polluting oil wells. July 16, 2020
With our allies, Sierra Club submitted a letter to the Newsom Administration and a letter to the Task Force on Business and Jobs Recovery calling on CalGEM to remediate idle and orphan wells and recoup the costs from oil and gas
operators as required by law. June 23, 2020
CalEPA Carbon Neutrality Studies
California’s 2019 Budget Act (AB 74), appropriated $3 million in funding to the Secretary for Environmental Protection, to conduct two studies that examine pathways to reach a carbon neutral economy by 2045. Sierra Club and our allies have written multiple letters to CalEPA about these studies to provide our recommendations. LA County’s Baldwin Hills Community Standard District (Inglewood Oil Field)
California Air Resource Board (CARB) has selected the Baldwin Hills Inglewood Oil Field for their Study of Neighborhood Air near Pollution Sources (SNAPS). Sierra Club submitted this letter with recommendations for their site selection. May 31, 2020.

Culver City – Oil and Gas regulations (Inglewood Oil Field)
The West Los Angeles Group of the Sierra Club adopted this resolution of support for the City of Culver City in their development and implementation of oil and gas regulations and associated Specific Plan land uses and conditions. July 9, 2017.
Ahead of the Council’s June 17th, 2021 vote to phase out and clean up oil wells in 5 years, Sierra Club along with a coalition of community orgs sent this letter to the council on June 15th, 2021.
City of Los Angeles – Oil and Gas (multiple oil fields)
This resolution in support of the City of Los Angeles’ consideration of a 2,500-foot human health and safety buffer passed unanimously by the Angeles Chapter Clean Break Team. August 27, 2017
